Chapter 1
Eddie sighed looking up at the starry night sky.
“Being a chipmunk is so hard,” he thought.
“Sometimes I wish I was a star.”
Suddenly, Eddie’s dad came rushing out onto the hilltop.
“Eddie!” his voice boomed.
“It’s late! Dinner is getting REALLY cold!”
Eddie was confused.
“But dad,” he said.
“Dinner is supposed to be cold! It’s coldslaw!”
Eddie’s dad put his paw to his forehead and sighed.
“Eddie,” he said.
“It’s coleslaw, not coldslaw.”
“Oh.” said Eddie.
“Well, it should be coldslaw.” he mumbled.
Time passed like a chipmunk skittering to a basket of fruit. Soon, it was time for Eddie to go to bed. His heart felt like it was beating a million beats per second.
“I’m so excited to go on the field trip in a few days!” he thought.
“It’s going to be a blast!”
That was the last thought Eddie had before he let the heat of his bed wash over him.
Eddie woke up on the right side of the bed that morning. He cheerfully jumped and happily skittered across the shiny wood floor. This was because he smelled…
“PANCAKES!” shouted Eddie’s mom.
“Yippee blurfadoodle!” Eddie responded, which is obviously chipmunk for “yippee blurfadoodle!”.
He squeaked down the stairs, squealing,
“Pancakes! Pancakes! Pancakes!”
“Someone’s an excited chipmunk!” said his mom.
“That’s ME!” he squealed again.
“Are there blueberries? Are there blueberries?”
Eddie’s mom smiled warmly.
“Of course, honey,” she said.
“Just the way you like it.”
Five minutes later, Eddie was greedily chomping down on his pancakes, occasionally taking a big gulp of milk. His milk mustache grew as his face got splattered with blueberry “guts”.
“Um, honey,” said Eddie’s mom.
“I think you should go wash up.”
Eddie walked into the bathroom, an assortment of facial, dental, and hygiene products laid out in front of him. As he walked toward the sink, he finally saw his reflection.
“Oh my chipmunk!” he screamed.
“I’m blue!”
And he wasn’t lying. While Eddie stood amazed at his blueberry face, he heard his parents giggle.
“Not funny!”
“Right, son, sorry,” said Eddie’s dad.
Eddie looked one more time, then took a wet towel to scrub away the blueberry insides. He scrubbed and scrubbed until he looked again and saw… a blue chipmunk.
“Awwwwwww.” he thought and tried again.
No change. So Eddie took the foaming hand wash soap and soap-ified the towel. When he scrubbed again the tiniest bit of blueberry came off.
“Yippee blurfadoodle!”
But Eddie was an impatient chipmunk. So, he squirted the soap all over his furry face. Eddie burst out laughing when he saw his reflection. He looked like an 86-year-old chipmunk with a giant white beard.
“Oh well,” he thought.
“As a wise chipmunk once said, ‘it is what it is’. Wait, no, I heard that from Chipmunk TV. Oh. As a wise person from Chipmunk TV who had absolutely no importance at all once said, ‘it is what it is.’”
Eddie scurried down the stairs, when he suddenly slammed into the door, splattering foam soap. “Ouch.”
“Eddie, honey, are you okay?” asked his mother.
“Yes, I sure am, ma’am.” he said in his best old-chipmunk voice.
“Um, is there someone else here?”
Eddie giggled and then he walked into the dining room where his mom was.
“What the chipmunk?!” Eddie’s mom exclaimed.
“Why is there an 86-year-old chipmunk in our kitchen?”
“Chill, mom, it’s me, Eddie.”
“Ooh,” said Eddie’s mom.
“Well, wash off all that soap.”
Once Eddie washed off the white soap, he walked downstairs with a soaking, dripping, wet face. “Come on, Eddie,” whined his mother.
“The least you could do is dry it.”
So Eddie went back upstairs to dry his face.
When he finally went back to the kitchen, his mom approved.
“Phew.” he thought.
Eddie then went outside, and found his friend, Fred the chipmunk.
“Hi, Fred! What's up?” asked Eddie.
“Nothing much.” replied Fred.
“Then, do you wanna go pick strawberries?” Eddie asked.
“Sure!” said Fred, smiling.
“I can ask my mom to make strawberry pie!”
“Oooh! Yummy!” said Eddie.
“Everyone knows your mom makes the best strawberry pies!”
“Wow! Really?” asked Fred.
“Yes! Dude, you’re like a celebrity!”
Fred beamed.
“Yay! Now, let’s go pick strawberries.”
So the two chipmunks went to pick strawberries, for some reason.
